Study Abroad

The Department encourages all its students to pursue study abroad, whether in the programs in Spain or Latin America approved by Northwestern University, among them the summer program at the Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico; the COPA Programs in Argentina and Chile; or other programs approved by the Study Abroad Office.

We believe that studying abroad and getting intensive language immersion will not only improve your communication skills and enable you to become fully bilingual but also significantly enrich your knowledge of the culture and the social environments where Spanish is spoken.

We strongly recommend to all students planning to study abroad and to seek credit for their work to:

  • Check information on specific programs and standard language requirements in the Study Abroad Office.
  • Make an appointment with one of the departmental advisers at the time of their application. This initial meeting will help students plan reliably their program of study abroad and facilitate the Department accreditation for Spanish courses upon their return.
  • Read the department criteria for abroad credit transfer.
