Advisement Guidelines
1. Students may consult with any faculty major/minor adviser in the Department. Students are not assigned to specific advisers. In order to facilitate the advisement of students by any adviser, the Department maintains a record of each advising session in students' major/minor files.
2. Students should see an adviser at the beginning of each quarter or during pre-registration or advanced registration. Students coming for an advisement session should bring a copy of an unofficial transcript of their academic record to the meeting with an adviser.
3. Students interested in pursuing a major or minor in Spanish should have a Declaration of Major/Minor form signed by an adviser as soon as possible.
4. Graduating students should have a Petition to Graduate form completed and signed by an adviser before the WCAS deadline.
5. Students should take courses in sequence as much as is reasonable and appropriate, and according to requirements.
6. No P/N accepted.
7. Courses for the major and for the minor must meet the minimum WCAS grade requirement of C-.
8. Only courses given in Spanish in the Department will count towards the major or minor, with the exception of courses taken abroad that have been approved for departmental credit by a Study Abroad Adviser and a course offered in CLS (Comparative Literary Studies) by a member of the faculty in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
9. Independent Study (399) courses are open to seniors with excellent academic records and, in exceptional cases, to very highly qualified juniors. An overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.5 in Spanish is required. An Independent Study is a full credit course that must be taken for a grade and must focus on a clearly defined subject of intellectual and academic substance. The subject matter should be one that is not normally covered by regularly scheduled courses offered by the department. A 399 course is approved only if the research project has academic merit and the faculty member consulted is willing and qualified to direct the research project. Students must submit a formal petition for 399 courses.
10. Related courses constitute a coherent pattern of study and are chosen from courses taken in other departments or programs, such as, but not limited to, anthropology, art history, biology, history, journalism, music, political science, etc. Students should focus on the idea of a coherent pattern; this pattern does not need to have any direct relation to Latin American or Spanish literature and culture. Double majors and majors with minors in other fields automatically satisfy this requirement.
11. Honors is by invitation only to outstanding students.
