Registering for a course in the Department
REGISTRATION GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
PROCEDURES FOR REGISTRATION
You may register for any class directly online from any computer that is connected to the internet. Class rank and the last two digits of your Student ID number determine appointment times. Students may register anytime after their appointment time, but not before.
IF YOU CANNOT REGISTER FOR A COURSE
If the course and section you want to register for is closed due to full enrollment your options are as follows:
1. Please keep checking CAESAR to see if a space has opened up in the class you want. Adding and dropping courses is done directly through CAESAR, not through the department.
2. If you wish, you may sign your name on a New Section list once they are posted. They are located beside Crowe 1-178. We will do everything we can to accommodate our students, but please keep in mind that signing a New Section list does not guarantee that a New Section will open.
3. If the course you’d like to take has a coordinator (please see below), then email the coordinator about why you need to take this course. You should also include your year at NU, if you are planning on/have declared a major/minor in Spanish, and if you are planning on studying abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. If the course does not have a coordinator, please email this information directly to the instructor.
4. Be sure to attend the first day of class (your preferred section), and follow up with the instructor about why you need to take this course.
On the third day of class, during the Change of Registration Period (Add/Drop), permission numbers will be distributed to those students who will be able to add into the class. Students will be notified by email if they will be able to add into a section by the third day of class, and on the third day of class the instructor will distribute permission numbers to students.
IF YOU’RE UNSURE OF WHICH COURSE TO TAKE
Students without AP credit should take the online placement exam (http://placement-test.mmlc.northwestern.edu/) to determine the appropriate course, unless they have not had any Spanish, in which case they should plan on enrolling in Spanish 101-1 in Fall or Summer quarters. Students with AP credit should observe the following guidelines: 1) Students with an AP of 3 should enroll in Spanish 125-0 (preferably in Fall); 2) Students with an AP of 4 should enroll in 199-0 (offered each quarter); 3) Students with an AP of 5 should enroll in 202-0 or 203-0 (both offered each quarter). For questions not answered here, please consult either the coordinator (list of coordinators found in Department of Spanish & Portuguese main office) of the course you think you should take, or the Acting Director or the Assistant Director of the Spanish Language Program.
IF YOU THINK YOU NEED TO SWITCH COURSES DUE TO PLACEMENT
For questions about the placement exam, contact the Placement Exam Coordinator, Chyi Chung (c-chung@northwestern.edu). For questions about possible changes in placement, consult either the Acting Director of the SLP, Heather Colburn (h-colburn@northwestern.edu) or the Assistant Director, Elena Lanza (e-lanza@northwestern.edu).
