Spanish major
The major provides undergraduates with a thorough grounding in Spanish language, literature, and culture. Students may choose between two concentrations, or an appropriate combination of both.
- Literature and Cultures of Spain
- Literature and Cultures of Latin America
In consultation with an advisor, each student designs a program built around one of these concentrations and representing a coherent pattern of study. Many students fulfill some of the requirements for the major through courses taken in the Study Abroad Programs.
Prerequisite: Spanish 199 or AP score of 5 or placement by the online Spanish Language Placement Exam.
Major Course Requirements: The major in Spanish requires 15 courses taught in Spanish (with exceptions noted below).
- 201 or 202 (heritage speakers of Spanish must take an appropriate substitute course)
- 203 (heritage speakers of Spanish may take 207 as a substitute)
- 204
- 220 (Introduction to Literary Analysis)
- Three survey courses chosen from 250, 251, 260 and/or 261
- Six 300-level courses in the department that form an area of concentration including at least one course that deals with a period prior to the nineteenth century
- Two elective courses at the 200 or 300 level taken in the department; in another department, with prior approval of an undergraduate adviser; or in study abroad programs, as long as the courses are related to the historical, literary, and/or cultural traditions of Hispanic countries
Note:
- A 300-level COMP LIT course that includes an important component of Latin American and/or Spanish literature and is taught by a member of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese may be substituted for a 300-level course requirement. (Adviser approval is required to ensure that no courses are duplicated)
- A study abroad course taught in Spanish with content related to the historical and cultural tradition of a Hispanic country may substitute for 201, 202, or 301, if these departmental courses have not already been taken. See Guidelines for Abroad Credit Transfer.
