Student awards
Each year, in the first week of the Spring quarter, the Department's faculty may submit to the chair and Awards Committee nominations for the following undergraduate essays prizes:
- Best Essay on the Literatures and Cultures of Latin America and/or Spain Prize
- Humberto E. Robles Prize for the Best Honors Thesis in Spanish
- Best Essay for Spanish 200-level Literature and Culture Classes Prize
- Best Essay in Spanish 202-2
The prizes carry with them a monetary award. One paper per class from Spring quarter of the previous year, as well as Fall and Winter quarters of the current year, may be nominated.

Chyi Chung, Senior Lecturer, was awarded the School of Continuing Studies' Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award for 2008-2009. SCS awards three prizes each year, one for undergraduate teaching, another for graduate instruction, and a third for non-credit teaching.
Joel Colom-Mena, Lecturer, won a coveted place on the 2009-2010 ASG Faculty and Administrator Honor Roll in late May. The undergraduate student body selected him as one of seventy members on the Honor roll. The selection was very competitive ,with great candidates across each of Northwestern's six schools.
